This book is a well crafted journey into a world that many people don't know much about until they are suddenly dropped into it. That world is the modern hospital and the vast amount of medical technology and methods that enable interventions that prolong life in ways that were not possible in even the recent past. The book discusses a lot of the amazing technology used in the modern hospital but that is certainly not the main theme of this excellent book. The main theme, is about what happens to the qualities of life for those who have such interventions performed on them. When the book looks at the mental and physical effects on those who receive modern high tech care, we find out things are not black and white at all. Every chapter covers different patients who are recipients of very expensive and complicated highly technological care and in each case we see what they go through with a procedure. Dr. Lamas does a beautiful job of telling the personal stories all these patients as they deal with transplants, respiratory failures and other life threatening issues. Most importantly for the readers of this book though, we see what the patients face afterwards. We are forced to confront the qualities of life a person has afterwards and these qualities are the essence of a troubling and frightening aspect of modern medical science. We really have to take more time to contemplate what constitutes a good quality of life and sometimes not having one of these high tech procedures done just might be a better way to go. What a person has to deal with months or years after a procedure may be the same or even worse than what life was like before. Modern medicine can do amazing things but it can't answer that question conclusively as this fantastic book shows so well.
